Luckenbooth Paperweight
$45.00 $150.00
The earliest record of heart-shaped
charms in Scotland dates back to 1503. In the 18th century these
charms were often known as “Luckenbooths” because they were sold from “locked
booths” outside St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. Shopkeepers were given the
heart shaped charms as tokens to prove they had purchased a “locking booth” and
it became a tradition to give this to a loved one when trading had ended. In
the time of Mary, Queen of Scots, the charm appears with a crown.
From Caithness Glass, Scotland, the Luckenbooth paperweight, which honors this traditional Scottish betrothal design, is fine millefiori set upon a ruby bed. Approx 3 ½”, 99mm diameter. Gift boxed.
